chapternow is a personal diary app that respects your privacy. We do not collect analytics, show ads, or share your data with third parties. Your journal entries stay under your control at all times.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Data You Create
When you use chapternow, you create personal content that is stored on your device or optionally synced to your Google Drive:
- Diary entries — titles, text content (Markdown), and dates
- Mood scores — optional 1–10 mood ratings
- Photos — images you attach to entries
- Tags — custom labels and colors you create to organize entries
1.2 App Settings
Your preferences are stored locally on your device:
- Theme and accent color selection
- Language preference
- Reminder schedule (time and days)
- Storage mode preference
- App passcode (stored as a hashed value, not in plain text)
1.3 Google Account Information
If you choose to enable Google Drive sync, chapternow accesses your Google account through Google Sign-In. We receive:
- Your email address (used to authenticate with Google Drive)
- OAuth tokens (used to read and write files in your Drive)
We do not access your Google profile name, profile photo, contacts, or any other Google data beyond what is needed for Drive file operations.
1.4 Data We Do NOT Collect
- No analytics or usage tracking
- No crash reports sent to external services
- No advertising identifiers
- No location data
- No device fingerprinting
2. How Your Data Is Stored
You choose how your data is stored. You can switch between these modes at any time in Settings:
| Storage Mode | Where Data Lives | Account Required |
|---|---|---|
| On This Device | Local SQLite database and files on your phone | No |
| Google App Folder | Hidden app-specific folder in your Google Drive, inaccessible to other apps or the Drive UI | Google account |
| Google Drive Folder | A "chapternow" folder visible in your Google Drive | Google account |
Entries are stored as Markdown files. Photos are stored as JPEG images. In all modes, a local copy is also kept on your device.
3. Device Permissions
chapternow requests the following permissions, each tied to a specific feature:
| Permission | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Photo Library | Attach existing photos to diary entries |
| Camera | Take new photos to attach to entries |
| Notifications | Send local daily reminders to write |
All permissions are optional. The app functions without granting any of them. You can revoke permissions at any time in your device settings.
4. Third-Party Services
chapternow uses the following third-party services:
- Google Sign-In — for authenticating your Google account when you enable Drive sync. Governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
- Google Drive API — for reading and writing your diary files to your Google Drive. Data is transmitted over HTTPS.
No other third-party services, SDKs, or APIs are integrated. There are no analytics providers, ad networks, or social media trackers.
5. Data Sharing
We do not sell, share, rent, or disclose your data to any third party. Your diary content is never transmitted to our servers — we do not operate any servers.
The only data transfer that occurs is between your device and your own Google Drive, initiated by you, over encrypted connections (HTTPS).
6. Data Retention and Deletion
- Local data is deleted when you uninstall the app or manually delete entries within the app.
- Google Drive data remains in your Drive until you delete it. Uninstalling the app does not automatically remove files from your Drive.
- You can delete individual entries and photos at any time from within the app.
- You can sign out of Google at any time to stop syncing.
7. Data Security
- Your app passcode is stored as a hashed value, not in plain text.
- All communication with Google Drive uses HTTPS encryption.
- Local data is stored in the app's sandboxed storage area, which is protected by your device's operating system.
- Google Drive data is protected by your Google account's security settings (including two-factor authentication if you have it enabled).
8. Children's Privacy
chapternow is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has used the app, please contact us so we can advise on data removal.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
